Best
Bible resources on the Net
by
Graeme J. Davidson, November
2001
Sex and
pop star names edge out the Bible in search engine requests. Yet
there are nearly 6 million Bible-related sites on the web! Trying
to sift through that many to find what you need is a daunting
task. There's
in-depth biblical research and daily Bible study to off-the-wall
apocalyptic ramblings. Which sites are best for your needs? Here
are some of the best of the Internet's free Bible resources.
In-depth
biblical research and key resources
Resource
Pages for Biblical Study This is undoubtedly the best biblical
resource site on the Internet. It is produced by Torrey Seland,
Assoc. Prof. Biblical Studies, Volda University College, Norway.
There are links to most of the research resources you need
Greek and Hebrew texts, non-canonical texts, a selection of Bible
commentaries, writings of the Gnostics and early Fathers, key
historical documents and information, and much more.
Finding
biblical passages and texts
The
Bible Gateway This site is simple and fast to use. On one
side of the screen search for a particular text anywhere in the
Bible or limit the search to a particular book. If you know the
reference, like John 3:16, use the other side of the screen and
search for the passage. There is a choice of Latin and 14 major
modern language versions of the Bible as well as a choice of 9
biblical translations from the New International Version to the
New and old King James versions.
Biblical
Commentaries
The
World Wide Study Bible provides a number of traditional commentaries,
sermons and notes for any passage you select from the Bible.
Daily readings
and meditations
There are a number of good sites here. Your preference will probably
depend on your needs and theological leanings. Go to Web
Devotionals Day and select the daily readings and mediations
you prefer from links to over 50 sites, including, Christian Fellowship
Devotionals, the Daily Canon, Daily Devotions for Individuals
and Families, Daily Light, Daily PresbyCan, and many more.
Gospel
parallels - where the gospels accounts are compared with each
other
An ideal introduction for the serious student is the The
Five Gospels Parallels edited by John W. Marshall from the
Department for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto. There
is a choice of the five Gospels (including Thomas), the four canonical
Gospels, the Q Twosome, the Five Gospels plus Paul, and more.
Interlinear
translations, concordances, lexicons
Try the Bible study tools on Crosswalk.com;
or the Blue Letter Bible
where you select a passage and click a button to view the Greek
or Hebrew text, another button to compare eight English translations
plus the Vulgate, while other buttons provide dictionaries and
maps. Academic purists may prefer The
Greek New Testament with its choice of Greek texts and Greek
- English interlinear text and grammatical tags.
Meanings
of biblical words
If you want to know the origin and meaning of Bible words Vines
Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words is excellent.
How to
pronounce those difficult Biblical words
If you have to read about who begot whom to the assembled multitude
on Sunday and don't know how to pronounce their names in American
English, use Biblical
Words Pronunciation Guide. But your computer will need to
be sound enabled for WAV sounds.
