Gambling now: vice, virtue or both?

Revelations about William Bennett’s $8 million in gambling losses came at a time when 34 states are considering expanding gambling to ease critical budget shortfalls. Bennett, known for his moral crusades, initially responded by saying that he’s never preached against gambling; his Roman Catholic faith also doesn’t condemn it in all circumstances. Yet in recent years a wide spectrum of religious groups have joined hands to intensify efforts to limit gambling, and new research has provided more evidence that gambling’s cost to society outweighs its benefits. How much do morals matter in the gambling debate?
